Description:

"The State of the Prisons in England and Wales…" 3rd Ed., Groundbreaking Publication on Prison Reform Ca. 1784!

A third edition copy of "The State of the Prisons in England and Wales, with Preliminary Observations, and an Account of Some Foreign Prisons and Hospitals" by John Howard (Warrington: T. Cadell et al., 1784. 492 pp [19 indexes]). Features modern buckram boards with gold stamped title to spine. Expected wear including bumped corners, general age toning to edges and within, some tearing to bookplates, as well as foxing and other minor areas of deterioration. Overall, very good condition- an incredible account of late-18th century criminal institutions.

First published in 1777, the third edition of this exciting publication includes important additions not found in the first two, detailing Howard's European travels post-1780. The book features a total of twenty-two engraved bookplates (six single-page, four folding, twelve double-page, and one double-page and folding), including detailed architectural plans of the described prisons. Among the institutions Howard visited were Newgate Prison (plate 20), the Bastille (plate 18), and Plymouth's Royal Naval Hospital (plate 21).

John Howard (1726-1790) was a British philanthropist and early prison reformer who, throughout his life, would visit hundreds of prisons across England, Wales, Scotland, and continental Europe. His first prison visit came in 1773 upon his appointment to High Sheriff of Bedfordshire. In turn, rather than delegating his duties to the under-sheriff as was customary, Howard inspected the county prison himself. The shocking conditions he witnessed therein, partially caused by overcrowding from prisoners not being able to pay the jailer's fees spurred him to action, eventually taking the issue to Parliament in 1774. Indeed, it was his instructions on sanitation put forward in "The State of the Prisons in England and Wales.." that were first attributed to the implementation of single-celled prisons in the UK, and by extension, the United States.
