Description:

Charles III's 4th Great Grandfather Sees to London Bridges in 1796

A petition for Letters Patent signed by William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, as "Portland". 1p, measuring 7.5" x 12.5", Whitehall, dated April 25, 1796. Signed by Portland as Home Secretary at the conclusion. The petition has flattened folds, edge chipping, and light soiling and toning throughout. With a large, bold signature. Overall very good.

The document is a petition made by James Jordan of Oakhill, Somerset, to King George III, for having "invented certain new Improvements in the building and constructing of Bridges, aqueducts, and various public and private buildings and which may also be applied to other useful Purposes." A second hand has endorsed the document at the bottom, reading "His Majesty is graciously pleased to refer this Petition to Mr Attorney or Mr Solicitor General to consider thereof and report his opinion what maybe properly done therein, whereupon His Majesty will declare his further Pleasures."

William Henry Cavendish Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, (1738 – 1809) was a British politician during the late Georgian era. He was current King Charles the III's 4th Great Grandfather. He served twice as Prime Minister, first from April to December 1783 and then again from 1807–1809. He also served as Home Secretary from 1794 to 1801 under Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger.
