Type I Photo of Prince Charles & Tricia Nixon During Their 2-Day-Long Courtship, PSA Certified Authentic

An official White House photograph showing Charles, then Prince of Wales (born 1948) walking with Tricia Nixon (born 1946), the eldest daughter of 37th U.S. President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon. Washington, D.C. July 16, 1970. The color photograph on Kodak paper is neatly hand-stamped "Official Photograph / The White House / Washington / 16JY70 C3916-02A" at top verso. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified authentic. Near fine. The photograph measures 10" x 8" while the slab measures 13.25" x 9.75."

This photograph was almost certainly snapped sometime during a late-night moonlit outing to the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument on July 16, 1970, described in President Nixon's proposed itinerary for the royal guests as "Tour of the Monuments in the Capital." Prince Charles and David Eisenhower bonded early on by descending the 50 flights of stairs from the top of the Washington Monument together on foot.

The future King Charles III told CNN in 2015 that "they were trying to marry me off to Tricia Nixon" during his 1970 visit to the United States. Tricia was three years Charles's senior and President Nixon's only unmarried daughter. The July 31, 1970 issue of "Life Magazine" didn't refer to Nixon's aspirations to secure an international alliance with Great Britain, but contemporaries did note that Nixon seemed unusually keyed up about the royal visit. Tricia Nixon married Edward F. Cox, a Harvard Law School student, eleven months after Charles's departure.

Prince Charles and his sister Princess Anne arrived in the United States on July 16, 1970 for a 2-day unofficial visit to Washington, D.C. and its environs. The young royals, then 21 and 19 years old, followed a dizzying itinerary: sightseeing included visits to the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Camp David via helicopter, Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institution's Space Museum, and even a Washington Senators baseball game! The siblings' constant companions were their young American hosts, Tricia and Julie Nixon Eisenhower, and David Eisenhower.
