Description:

South Carolina Planter Signs 1737 Bond to Give Brother's Widow a Lifetime Annuity

Abraham Satur signed this bond for £240 sterling to promise to pay an annuity of £20 sterling to his sister-in-law Mary Satur each July 1 for the rest of her life. The income likely stemmed from property or a business venture that he and his brother Jacob Satur jointly owned. Attorneys Maurice Lewis and Thomas Henning also signed the bond as witnesses.

In his will, written in February 1743, Abraham Satur included a provision that "the sum of twenty pounds Sterling money be paid yearly out of the same to Mrs. Mary Satur Widow of my late Brother Jacob Satur during the Term of her Natural life, in Complyance of a Bond enter'd into by me for that Purpose." This document is that bond.

Abraham Satur (d. ca. 1746) was a planter in South Carolina and the brother of Jacob Satur. He married Jane, and they had at least one daughter Anne. He was a slaveowner and offered a £10 reward for the return of a runaway slave named Cuffe in September 1732.

Jacob Satur (ca. 1690-1732) of London was a merchant and may have become bankrupt in 1727. He later became a wealthy planter, land speculator, and merchant in South Carolina. He married Mary Satur and owned a plantation on Goose Creek, a few miles northwest of Charleston.

Thomas Ellery (d. 1738) was an attorney from Great Britain who practiced in Charleston from at least 1724. In October 1725, he married Anne Moore. In March 1734, Ellery offered his house in Charleston for sale, intending to move to his plantation.
