Description:

1772 Sworn Legal Statement Apologizing for Slandering a Colonel's Daughter

A legal document in which George Anderson apologizes for slandering the daughter of Col. William Callaway, Miss Catherine Cara Callaway (b. 1761). Anderson had accused the 11-year-old of stealing money from him but later apologized for misspeaking. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 8.25", Bedford County, Virginia, dated May 26, 1772. With flattened folds, toning, and foxing. Uneven and slightly chipped edges. Boldly signed. Overall very good.

The statement reads in part:
"Whereas Miss Cara Callaway by Col Wm Callaway her Father & next Friend hath instituted ag[ains]t me a Suit for speaking words injurious to her character, to wit; that she stole from me a sum of money; & whereas I am desirous to make Reparation to her for speaking such words: I do hereby declare that I had no Reason for speaking such words; & I desire that this Paper may be recorded…"

William Calloway (1714-1777) was a prominent and wealthy Virginia landowner who commanded militia during the French and Indian War, participated in the Revolutionary War, and presided over the first court held in Bedford County. He would later serve in the House of Burgesses for 13 sessions. It is no stretch of the imagination that the powerful Calloway would have stepped in on his daughter's behalf. Had Anderson been mistaken, or had Cara's wealthy and influential father put pressure on him to retract his statement?
