Description:

Henry Patrick

Patrick Henry signature, with excellent provenance

1.375" x .625" paper slip signed by Revolutionary War era politician Patrick Henry (1736-1799) as "PHenry". Laid down on a larger 5.875" x 2.25" paper fragment inscribed with the following provenance: "Patrick Henry. Given to Mrs. J. C. P. Stevens, by Geo. S. Hillard, the author, 1858." In near fine condition with expected light edge toning.

"Geo. S. Hillard, the author" may refer to George Stillman Hillard (1808-1879), a Massachusetts intellectual active throughout the mid-nineteenth century. In addition to partnering in a law practice with Charles Sumner, Hillard served in state government, wrote on a variety of subjects, edited numerous periodicals, and socialized with literary heavyweights like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. As far as we could determine, Hillard did not write exclusively about Henry. However, Hillard did reproduce Henry's famous speech in his series of elementary school Readers published throughout the 1860-70s, so he was aware of him as a subject.

Patrick Henry was one of the most eloquent mouthpieces of the American Revolution. Indeed, his declaration "Give me Liberty or give me Death!", delivered while at the Second Virginia Convention in 1775, is one of the most famous quotes in American history. The lawyer used his rhetorical flare to advance the cause of revolutionary politics throughout the 1760s-1770s.
