Description:

Harrison, (President) Benjamin

Benjamin Harrison signature, with excellent provenance

4.875" x 1.625" cream colored paper slip boldly signed by 23rd U.S. President Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) as "BenjHarrison".  Inscribed with the following provenance: "Written to C. Ellis Stevens from Fifth Ave. Hotel N.Y., June 1st 1896" and "Autograph of Pres. Harrison". Paper slip likely excised from larger TLS and laid down on larger fragment. In near fine condition with expected paper folds.

The 62-year-old Harrison had caused not a little controversy just one month before when he married 37-year-old Mary Dimmick (1858-1948). Harrison's adult children did not approve of Dimmick, who was Harrison's first wife's niece and had served as the First Lady's White House secretary. The two wed in a quiet ceremony at Saint Thomas Church, an Episcopal Gothic Revival style cathedral located on Fifth Avenue, on April 6, 1896. Around this time, Harrison was making speeches reinforcing core Republican Party values in advance of the 1896 Presidential election.

"C. Ellis Stevens" may refer to C. Ellis Stevens (1853-1906), an Episcopal clergyman in New York City.

Benjamin Harrison was the grandson of 9th U.S. President William Henry Harrison (1773-1841). The younger Harrison served during the Civil War, seeing action in Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, and eventually reaching the rank of brevet brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. After the war, Harrison became increasingly interested in state politics. Harrison served one presidential term in between 22nd and 24th U.S. President Grover S. Cleveland (1837-1908)’s two terms.
