Description:

Martin Van Buren ALS Re: A Publication in the Enquirer

1p, measuring 7.875" x 7.5", no place, dated April 25, 1828. Signed "M.V. Buren" at the conclusion and addressed to newspaper editor and politician, Azariah C. Flagg. Van Buren forwards an inquiry about a publication, writing in part: "Mr. Pitcher wishes you to write him a letter calculated for publication in the Enquirer giving the state of things present & in prospect & issue - the Presidential question is [illegible]…" The letter has flattened mail folds, along with edge toning and foxing. There are two strips of white mounting tape at the lower two edges, along with clear tape at the folds on verso.

It is possible that the Mr. Pitcher mentioned in the letter refers to Nathaniel Pitcher, who was serving as the Lieutenant Governor of New York at the time. Azariah Flagg was publisher of the Plattsburgh Republican (originally The Republican) and also served as Secretary of State of New York as well as New York State Comptroller. Martin Van Buren set about the year of 1828 seeking to find a candidate who could defeat John Quincy Adams, with who he strongly disagreed on public policies. He ultimately settled on Andrew Jackson, and helped campaign on his behalf. Van Buren was rewarded for his efforts by being appointed Jackson's Secretary of State. During his second term, Jackson went further to make Van Buren his Vice President.
