In 1946, auctioneers H.R. Harmer Inc. sold the entire valuable stamp collection of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Our own John Reznikoff knew Bernard Harmer, who sold the FDR Collection, personally. As a young dealer in the late 1970s, Reznikoff recalls discussing the Collection with Harmer who said that FDR was very visual and particular about what he bought for his own stamp collection. Stamp dealer Jacques MInkus (1901-1996), owner of the stamp departments at the Gimbel Brothers department stores in New York and Philadelphia, bought the small group of the “Bouquets & Brickbats” envelopes which FDR had kept and cherished. Some were “Bouquets” addressing him as, for example, “Greatest Man in the World” and “Mr. Big.” Others were “Brickbats” addressing him, for example, as “Rattlesnake Roosevelt” and “Franklin Deficit Roosevelt.” At the height of Minkus' success he had counters in 38 department stores around the United States. Minkus considered FDR’s “Bouquets & Brickbats” his favorite personal collection. The group was held by Minkus’ heirs until 2013 and was acquired from his grandson.

The postmarked envelopes here offered were in FDR’s “Bouquets & Brickbats” grouping which Minkus had exhibited in 1946. After he had purchased the collection, he was quoted by United Press, “I am 100 per cent for Roosevelt. The item gave the president some laughs. It doesn’t hurt for us to laugh at it now … Pretty soon we will advertise the show. I can hardly wait.”
