Frank Tao Chinese Press Counselor Archive: JFK, LBJ, and Much More!

A fascinating archive related to Frank C. H. Tao, Press Attaché for the Embassy of the Republic of China, Ca. 1960-1980. The group includes a number of political souvenirs, such as typed letters, first-day covers, special issue stamps, and event photographs, as well as personal items and ephemera, such as a cigarette case, watch, tie tack, and clipped cartoons. The group has varying degrees of wear, toning, and soiling, with folds and minor creasing to most letters and documents. Expected use wear to personal items such as the watch and tie tack. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information. Highlights from the group include:

1. Fourteen handwritten letters and documents in Chinese, untranslated, addressed to Frank Tao.
2. Fifty-two 4¢ Sun Yat-Sen Stamps, as well as a press release and two photographs from the commemorative event.
3. Henry Kissinger Typed Letter Signed, dated October 28, 1972.
4. Pierre Salinger, Press Secretary to the President, Two Typed Letters Signed, dated April 5, 1961, and October 24, 1961.
5. "Empress Catherine III" Typed Letter Signed, dated April 1, 1965. Little information can be found about who "Catherine III" was or how she had a claim to the Russian throne.
6. "LBJ" gold tie tack.
7. Two 8" x 10" color photographs from the 1961 Official State Visit by Republic of China VP Chen Chang, featuring John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
8. Japan Air Lines grey and gold cigarette case, housed in a wooden box.
9. Benson & Hedges cigarette box, filled with clipped newspaper cartoons and small greeting cards, along with a Waltham wristwatch with a leather band.
10. 1976 Senior League Baseball Team program, signed by all members of the team.
11. Multiple stamps: four LBJ 8¢ stamps, two 5¢ Lincoln and Sun Yat-Sen stamps, and two books of 1976 ROC and USA Bicentennial Commemorative Issue stamps.

Frank Tao (1916-2000) was born in Shanghai and became a reporter in China before moving to New York in 1945 to work for the Chinese News Service as an editor. After China came under Communist rule in 1958, Tao became a press attaché at the Nationalist Chinese embassy, where he worked until 1979. He continued to do press and other work for the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office as a senior advisor until his death.

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
