William T. Sherman End-of-War-Dated ALS Dated Same Day Orders No. 76, Sherman's Farewell Message, was Issued

1p autograph letter signed with rank by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891), as "W.T. Sherman / Major General / Comdg" at lower right. The letter, written at "Head-Quarters, Military Division of the Mississippi" at Washington, D.C. on May 30th 1865, is displayed above mimeographed copies of Sherman's Special Field Orders No. 76 dated the same day. Expected light paper folds and minor discoloration along the right edge, else near fine. Displayed within a pristine white mat measuring 20" x 22.25" overall.

In this letter addressed to Brigadier General Lorenzo Thomas (1804-1875), Adjutant General of the U.S. Army, Sherman wrote: "General, I have the honor to transmit herewith [not included with this lot] Copies of my Special Field Orders No. 75 and 74…"

Sherman's Special Field Orders No. 76, the next in succession to No. 74 and 75, were released the same day that he wrote this letter: May 30, 1865. Sherman's farewell address to the Armies of Tennessee and Georgia acknowledged their contributions to the war effort, so recently and triumphantly concluded. He stated in part: "…the time has come for us to part. Our work is done, and armed enemies no longer defy us."

Sherman's most lasting Civil War legacy was his eponymous March to the Sea. This westward march from Atlanta to Savannah between September and December 1864 delivered the death blow to the Confederacy. Sherman and his troops practiced total war against Confederate civilians, his scorched earth policy causing an estimated $100 million worth of property damage. Sherman himself refers to the March to the Sea in Special Field Orders No. 76, when he recalls: "Again we were not to be held back by any obstacles, and crossed over and fought four hard battles for the possession of the citadel of Atlanta…we…destroyed Atlanta, struck boldly across the State of Georgia, severed all the main arteries of life to our enemy, and Christmas found us at Savannah…"
