Description:

William Strong Superb ALS on His Nomination to the Supreme Court

2pp of a bifolium measuring 5.25" x 8.25", Philadelphia, dated February 17, 1870. Signed "W.Strong" and addressed to Hon. J.G. Jones. Strong discusses his possible appointment to the Supreme Court, in part:

"...I am under obligations to you for your congratulations, and for the friendly interest you manifest in my case. This is the most kind if view of the fact that our opinion respecting some political questions have differed, never however to the disturbance of our friendly relations. A seat upon the bench of the Supreme Court of the United States would be very agreeable to me. I would fill the measure of my ambition, to sit there and be able to perform the duties of the peace well. What the Senate may do with my nomination I do not know, I will try to possess my soul in patience until they act. I certainly cannot profess indifference to their action. Whatever may be, I have a satisfaction that I cannot express in the fact that my nomination has the cordial approval of the members of the bar throughout this state and I think of the public generally. Yet I sometimes think I should like to follow your example, and retire to the rest of a farm in the country. This is sometimes my dream, but I know it is only a dream, not a prophecy..." With flattened mail folds and light soiling throughout. Mounting residue at the left edge.

William Strong (1808-1895) first served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and was later appointed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States by President Ulysses S. Grant.
