A legal summons addressed to the Sheriff of Rowan County, issued by H. Gillard. Signed on verso "WHooper" as an attorney. 1p, measuring 8.25" x 6.25", Salisbury, North Carolina, dated September 25, 1779. Together with a receipt for the suit, listing legal costs, which had previously been attached to the document with red wax. Both document have flattened folds and light toning, foxing, and soiling. The summons has an area of light dampstaining. Boldly signed by Hooper.

The document summons Benjamin Miller before the Judges of the Superior Court at Salisbury on March 15 to pay a sum of £3 19 shillings for the cost of a suit against David Jenkins.

William Hooper (1742-1790) was a well-respected North Carolina attorney, Founding Father, and a member of the Continental Congress for North Carolina. Although he was initially hesitant to join the revolution against Great Britain, once he did he sought to gain a leadership role. In 1774 he was appointed to represent North Carolina in the First, and then later the Second, Continental Congress. He split his time between Congress and North Carolina, where he was forming a new government, and unfortunately missed the vote for the Declaration of Independence in July 1776. He did, however, arrive in time to sign it in early August.
