Description:

Vintage Photo of "Bloody Bill" Anderson After Being Killed By Union Solders, Owned by the Photographer

This Photo, 6.5" x 4", bearing a photograph of the deceased William T. Anderson was taken shortly after his death on October 27, 1864 in Richmond, Missouri. From the archives of famous Old West photographer John Tackett.

Likely from the early 20th century.

William T. Anderson was one of the deadliest and most notorious Confederate guerrilla leaders in the American Civil War which lead to him receiving his nickname “Bloody Bill” Anderson. Anderson led a band of men who targeted Union loyalists and federal soldiers in the states of Missouri and Kansas.

On September 27, 1864, Anderson staged a raid where his men robbed Unionist Congressman James S. Collins, captured a Union passenger train, and murdered 22 furloughed Union soldiers who had surrendered. Following this, Anderson’s men were pursued by the 39th Missouri Volunteer (Union) Infantry. Later in the day, a separate skirmish took place, where Anderson’s men ambushed the Unionist pursuers, leading to his men mutilating and torturing the federal survivors of the battle. The initial murders and the aftermath became known as the Centralia Massacre.

On October 27, 1864, under Lieutenant Colonel Samuel P. Cox, union forces caught up to Anderson and his 150 men. A brief battle ensued that lead to the death of Anderson who was shot in the head and immediately killed. Union soldiers photographed Anderson’s body and paraded it through the streets of Richmond, Missouri. Cox became a Union hero, and Anderson’s death would later become the motivation for Jesse James’s 1869 bank robbery in Gallatin, Missouri, where he mistakenly shot someone whom he believed to be Cox.

John Tackett owned a photography studio in Coffeyville, where he would capture many famous images.
