Vice President Schuyler Colfax, Signed Note and Lovely Engraving

Single page autographed, signed note on printed Lecture Broadside from Schuyler Colfax regarding his lecture circuit, 5.25" x 8.5." The autographed note appears along the bottom and is signed by Schuyler Colfax in full signature as "Schuyler Colfax." Dated "Jan 22, 1880" along top edge. Dark stain along the midline of the document coming from the adhesive placed on the verso of the document, not affecting the autographed note. Paper remnants affixed to the verso. Accompanied by a printed engraving of him with a printed signature, 4.5" x 6," also with adhesive stains, and paper remnants to verso.

A very rare signed note written by Colfax shortly after his term as Vice President, discussing his lecture circuit:

" … I am Dr. Sir, lecturing this week … your letter of 15th remailed has just reached me. I am to be at Amsterdam to lecture Jul 20th; but that week I (illegible) + all the time I have for lecturing this season is engaged already up to late in April. … I expect to be going to Albany N.Y. … and if a date then would be satisfactory to you, would come at the special rate of $60. But conditioned that the terms should not be published. If I do not hear from you, I will infer that date or terms are not satisfactory. …

Schuyler Colfax"

Schuyler Colfax Jr. (1823 –1885) was an American journalist, businessman, and politician from Indiana. He served as a United States Representative, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the 17th Vice President of the United States. To date, he is one of only two Americans to have served as both House speaker and vice president.

Colfax was known for his opposition to slavery while serving in Congress, and was a founder of the Republican Party. In January 1865, as Speaker of the House, Colfax made the unusual choice to cast a vote for passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. (Speakers can vote on House motions but, by convention, rarely do so.) After winning the presidential election of 1868 Grant and Colfax, at ages 46 and 45, were the youngest Presidential ticket elected in the 19th Century. Believing Grant would only serve one term, in 1870 Colfax attempted unsuccessfully to garner support for the 1872 presidential nomination by telling friends and supporters he would not seek a second vice presidential term. Grant ran again, and Colfax reversed himself and attempted to win the vice presidential nomination, but was defeated by Henry Wilson. He left politics and worked as a business executive and became a popular lecturer and speech maker.
