Description:

Two Irgun Anti-British Propaganda Broadsides, "Remember the Disgrace"

A pair of broadsides published by the Irgun, the National Military Organization in Palestine. Such broadsides were created as anti-British propaganda and to announce news of the Jewish Underground actions against the British in Palestine. Both are printed in Hebrew. With light toning and foxing, along with minor creasing and one or two small tears at the edges. Very fine.

The first broadside measures 9" x 12.375", Palestine, dated Tamuz (June-July) 1947. Titled "Remember the Disgrace!", it invokes the memory of a series of operations conducted by the British against the Jewish Yishuv on June 29, 1946, which came to be known as "Black Sabbath." In part: "Remember the disgrace - The double disgrace! The disgrace of the attack of a foreign and cruel slave and the disgrace of the surrender of frightened leaders. Remember the disgrace and rise to the people's war."

The second broadside measures 10" x 14", Palestine, dated Nisan (March-April) 18, 1948. This one is printed in memory of those soldiers who had fallen during Operation Hametz. Reading in part: "Commanders of the National Military Organization and its soldiers stand still in the memory of their brothers…Fallen in the Kabbalah on the 18th of Nisan 5768. Eternal glory for the soldiers of Israel who give their lives for the redemption of the people and liberation of the homeland."

The Jewish Underground armies, including the Irgun (National Military Organization in the Land of Israel) fought a sometimes violent war during the 1930s and 1940s in an effort to expel the British from Palestine. Tactics ranged from the use of propaganda to more extreme measures such as blowing up railroads and buildings. The propaganda war was fought via wall-posters and broadsides that would both sway public opinion and wage psychological warfare against the British. As it was illegal to distribute them, they were usually put up on store windows and billboards late at night by teenagers who could avoid the British patrols. If caught, distributers could be arrested or even shot. Because the British considered possession of these broadsides a criminal offense, very few have survived, making those that did a rare collector's piece.
