Description:

Two Early American Docs Signed by Jared Ingersoll & Stephen Mix Mitchell

Two documents relating to Early American politics and law courts in Pennsylvania and Connecticut, one signed by Constitution signer Jared Ingersoll (1749-1822), and one signed by Continental Congress delegate Stephen Mix Mitchell (1743-1835).

The lot is comprised of, in chronological order:

1. An autograph document signed by Stephen Mix Mitchell, then in his capacity as Hartford County Clerk of the Council, as "Stephen Mix Mitchell Clk of Council." Mitchell issued this directive from Hartford, Connecticut on May 27, 1792. Numbered, docketed, and counter-signed verso. Expected wear including toning, paper folds, and uneven edges, else near fine. The paper fragment measures 7.25" x 4."

Mitchell requested the Comptroller's office to reimburse "the Selectmen of Huntington" the sum of £10, which had been spent to provision "Henry Taylor a transient person."

Huntington is a now defunct town in Fairfield County, in southwestern Connecticut. It was established in 1789 after breaking away from Stratford; it now corresponds to the towns of Monroe and Shelton.

Stephen Mix Mitchell was a lawyer who served as a Continental Congress delegate. In addition to being involved in state government, Mitchell was also the presiding judge of the Hartford County Court from 1790 to 1793. Mitchell served as a U.S. Senator from Connecticut from 1793-1795.

2. A document signed by Jared Ingersoll, then Attorney General of Pennsylvania, as "Jared Ingersoll / Atty Genl" near lower right. The partly printed and partly handwritten document was issued during the April Sessions of 1797 in Bedford County, in southern-central Pennsylvania. Extensively docketed verso. Expected wear including paper folds, some split; minor toning; and isolated darkening, else near fine. 8" x 13.25."

The document pertained to a legal case involving Yeoman Adam Barton, who had been accused of assaulting one Henry Best and disturbing the peace. The docket verso reveals that Barton pled not guilty and requested that his punishment be confined to a small fine.

Like his contemporary Stephen Mix Mitchell, Jared Ingersoll was a trained lawyer with Patriot sympathies. He too served as a Continental Congress delegate. Later, Ingersoll attended the Constitutional Convention, and was one of eight delegates from Pennsylvania to sign the foundational document. He served as the Attorney General of Pennsylvania from 1791-1800 and from 1811-1817.
