Description:

Thomas Edison TLS with Photo and 3 Related Laboratory Letters. Superb Archive

A typed letter signed by Thomas Edison together with three related letters. All of the letters are typed on letterhead "From the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison." The letter, 1p, measuring 8.5" x 11", Orange, New Jersey, dated March 13, 1917, is signed "Thos A Edison" and is addressed to Captain G. E. Burd of the U.S. Navy. Edison politely declines an invitation due to having "so many experiments in progress here that I do not quite see how I can be away more than a day at a time without serious hindrance to the work that is going on…" He goes on, however, to express his desire to meet with Burd very soon. Accompanying the letter is a black and white photo, measuring 4.75" x 4", of Edison and Burd at the center of a group, n.p., n.d. The additional three letters are all addressed to Captain Burd from various staff members of Edison's lab. All with flattened mail folds and varying degrees of toning and soiling. Light chipping to the corners. There is some minor insect damage to Edison's letter, which does not affect the signature. All with bold signatures.

The additional letters include:
1. Miller Reese Hutchison TLS "MR Hutchison". Dated October 31, 1916, addressed to Captain Burd. Discussing hydrographic charts of New York Harbor. Accompanied by an ANS on a notecard signed "Hutch" to Burd, sending him Christmas greetings and a book.
2. Secretary to Hutchison TLS. Dated September 20, 1915, addressed to Captain Burd. Sending two signed photographs of Mr. Edison and Mr. Hutchison for Burd and his wife.
3. William H. Meadowcroft TLS "Wm H Meadowcroft". Dated October 13, 1919, addressed to Captain Burd. Stating that Edison would be pleased to meet with him while he continues his work on finishing the phonograph.

Captain G. E. Burd worked within the New York Navy Yard's Machinery Division. William H. Meadowcroft (1853-1937) was an English immigrant who served as personal secretary to Thomas Edison. Miller Reese Hutchison (1876-1944) was an electrical engineer and inventor who became associated with Thomas Edison in 1909 and was made chief engineer of Edison's laboratory from 1912 until 1918.
