Description:

The Beatles Group of (4) Contact Sheets for A Hard Day's Night

(4) Printed contact sheets, measuring 8" x 10", n.p., Ca. 1964. A group of 4 printed contact sheets for The Beatles' iconic album and film A Hard Day's Night, originally photographed by Robert Freeman who served as the band's photographer between 1963-1966. Each sheet is dedicated to one band member, featuring four columns of three negative black and white images (12 squares total). Depicts such images as Paul smoking and drinking a bottle of Coke, John posing and smiling expressively, George winking and looking contemplative, and Ringo holding his head and pointing at the camera. Minor surface imperfections and toning throughout, does not take away from the expressive and playful images associated with this pronounced era in The Beatles' career at the height of Beatlemania.

Following the release of their second album, Meet the Beatles (1963), the boys again commenced recording in January 1964 at the EMI Pathé Marconi Studios in Paris. A week later, they would go on to debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, garnering further notoriety in America. In between recording sessions, The Beatles were in the midst of filming their first movie also titled A Hard Day's Night, which would be released in the summer of 1964 and go on to receive critical acclaim. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards and follows The Beatles as they prepare for a television performance, all while meeting fans and getting into various shenanigans along the way.

The album itself showed a musical transition to a predominately pop sound, compared to that of more traditional Rock and Roll, and was also the first recording to feature all original compositions mainly by duo John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Side A of the UK release of A Hard Day's Night features songs from the movie, including the title track of the same name, "If I Fell", and "Can't Buy Me Love", while Side B contains the songs that didn't make the film, such as "When I Get Home" and "Any Time at All".
