Teddy Roosevelt as President Signed & Dedicated Cabinet Photo

Gelatin silver print photograph of 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), signed and inscribed with over 15 words in his hand as: "To / Mr C.H. Sherrill / with the regards and / hearty thanks of / Theodore Roosevelt / Oct 28th 1904" found along the bottom border of the embossed cabinet photo mount. The name of the photo studio is embossed in the lower right hand corner of the photo as: "Copyrighted / 1903 / C.M. Bell Photographic Co. / Washington, D.C." and it also appears in the lower right hand corner of the mount as "C.M. Bell's / Washington, D.C." An isolated area of photo loss at upper left has been retouched. Expected silvering commensurate with age. Scattered light stains along the mount edges and pencil inscriptions found verso. Else near fine. The photograph measures 4" x 5.5" while the mount measures 5.875" x 7.875."

Theodore Roosevelt looks grave and stalwart in this presidential portrait. In October 1904, Roosevelt had recently marked his third year anniversary in office (his predecessor 25th U.S. President William McKinley had died on September 14, 1901.)

President Roosevelt dedicated this photo to Charles H. Sherrill (1867-1936), whose origins, upbringing, education, personal interests, and political leanings closely resembled Roosevelt's, only nine years his senior. Sherrill, a Yale graduate, practiced law in New York City before serving as U.S. Ambassador to Argentina between 1909-1910 and U.S. Ambassador to Turkey between 1932-1933. Roosevelt and Sherrill, then, moved in the same social circles in New York City; shared the same fanatical interest in sports; wrote and published many books; and loved history, art, and the humanities in general. Roosevelt and Sherrill's politics were similarly hardline, and the two even served in the New York National Guard about 15 years apart.
