Selah Graves (1758-1825) was born in Sunderland, Massachusetts, to Reuben Graves (1724-1778) and Hannah Fuller Graves (1727-1817). During the Revolutionary War, Selah Graves served as a fifer in the 13th Massachusetts Regiment from 1777 to 1780. He reenlisted later in 1780 and served for another fifteen months. In 1788, he married Mary Bush (1758-1822), and they had at least six children. In 1819, he began receiving an invalid pension for his Revolutionary War service. The inscription on his gravestone reads, "Vain man, thy fond pursuits forbear, / Repent! They end is nigh! / Death at the farthest can't be far, / Oh, think before you die."
