Description:

SCLC Banquet Program Includes King, Jr., Abernathy, Sidney Poitier, Aretha Franklin

A program and menu from the Tenth Anniversary Banquet of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia on August 14, 1967. The olive green stock front cover has a deckled right edge allowing for easy access to the event program on the first page, and the four-course dinner menu on the second page. Expected minor wear including scattered areas of color lightening on the wrappers, and isolated staple rust on the interior. Else near fine. 7” x 4.75.” Provenance: Ex-Dr. Jesse L. Douglas (born 1930), Dr. King’s close friend and fellow minister and Civil Rights activist. Douglas was instrumental in planning the Selma Montgomery March in March 1965. Dr. Douglas, who is an African American with albinism, was often misidentified by news agencies in photographs as a sympathetic “unidentified white man” appearing alongside black protestors.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was a civil rights organization co-founded by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) and Dr. Ralph D. Abernathy (1926-1990) in 1957. Approximately 1,400 guests gathered in Atlanta, Georgia on the tenth anniversary of the organization to hear remarks from SCLC leadership, who also happened to be some of the most significant figures of the Civil Rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. introduced keynote honoree Sidney Poitier, stating: “Here is a man who is dedicated to human rights and freedom, and a generous contributor of funds, time, and talent in [sic] behalf of the SCLC.” Dr. Ralph D. Abernathy addressed the audience after Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. finished at the podium. The Reverend Andrew J. Young (born 1932), Executive Director of the SCLC since 1964, presented the special award to Sidney Poitier. Gospel singer Aretha Franklin also accepted an award.

Recent events in American politics had validated the raison d’etre of the SCLC and the Civil Rights movement in general. The nation had been paralyzed during the summer of 1967 by nearly 160 race riots in major American cities which resulted in numerous arrests, thousands of injuries, and over 80 deaths. Sadly, the tenth anniversary banquet was the last annual SCLC event that Dr. King attended, as he was assassinated eight months later.
