Samuel George Davis Jr. (1925-1990) was an American entertainer who had a varied career as an actor, singer, dancer, comedian, author, and film producer. Early in life, Davis was a long-term Democrat and supported John F. Kennedy's 1960 election campaign as well as Bobby Kennedy's 1968 campaign. However, a rift grew between him and the Kennedys after JFK refused to allow Davis to perform at his inauguration due to his relationship with white actress May Britt. Davis would go on to join the Republican party and became a close friend of President Richard Nixon, publicly endorsing him at the 1972 Republican National Convention. Davis drew a fair amount of criticism from the black community due to this relationship with Nixon, something Davis later said he regretted on account of Nixon not following through on promises he'd made concerning civil rights.
