Rene Gagnon World War II Letters to his Sweetheart, "Darling Kiddo"

GAGNON, RENE. World War II Autograph Letter Signed, “Rene”, in pencil, 4pp on two ruled sheets, 8” x 10.25”, Charleston, January 23, 1943, with original envelope hand addressed by Gagnon in red ink. Lightness to the penciled text, folds, wrinkling, small tear at one edge not affecting text, else Very Good. Accompanied by a Typed Letter, unsigned, 1p, 4.25” x 5.75”, Charleston, January 25, 1944. Very minor wear, else Fine. Both letters are to Gagnon’s girlfriend, Pauline Harnois.

From his military training at the Naval Prison Camp in Charleston, SC, Gagnon’s handwritten letter reads, in part, “I'm supposed to be out walking around my post but the Officer that inspects us has already gone by so I came in the house and am writing to you…it is a little hard to write with an overcoat on, and a rifle slung over my shoulder…you always wanted to go to a formal ball…I'll take you yet, it may be a long while but I'll be back someday and when I do we'll start all over, in that little white cottage with green shutters. You see right now I think that you and that little cottage are worth fighting for.”

Typed letter reads, in part, “I've got an office watch again…You asked me what manewvers [sic] meant it just means that we go out camping and training for a week at a time…I wish that you meant what you said about coming to Charleston if I didn't get a furlough pretty soon…I guess I don't have to tell you how lonely I am you must know as you must feel the same way I do I'm sure. You asked me if I went dancing, well sometimes, but I'll never enjoy it like I use [sic] to when we went."
