Kennedy John

Rare Press Pass Badge to the "Texas Welcome Dinner" for President Kennedy Nov 22, 1963 at 7:30pm.

Press Badge for JFK's "Texas Welcome Dinner" Scheduled for the Night of 22 November 1963.  Entitling its wearer to press privileges at the Texas Welcome Dinner, the night of President Kennedy's assassination. The Austin event celebrating JFK's arrival was slated for 7:30 p.m. on 22 November 1963, and he was expected in attendance as the guest of honor. Black and gold pass with white print bears the event title and names of Mr. & Mrs. Kennedy and Johnson. Stamped with serial No. 1029.  Original plastic sleeve present with attached pin on verso.

Original press badge to the famous evening dinner that never was…One thousand days in office, and Kennedy was worried that the backlash from the Civil Rights issue would cost him the South. He would need Texas again, absolutely, and by more than the 46,000 vote margin he’d squeaked by with in ’60.  A trip was called for, to meet with rich Texas donors, and straighten out, if he could, the conservative-liberal split in the state’s Democratic Party. The plan was to fly to Texas, make a half dozen appearances, and end the visit, on the night of November 22nd, in Austin, at a $100 a plate dinner for the State Democratic Executive Committee.

On the afternoon of the 22nd, at approximately half past noon, President Kennedy rode in an open limousine in Dallas and, as became history, he never made it to the dinner that evening. This press badge would of course never be used.

A rare and sobering piece of US history in highly collectible condition
