George Bernard Shaw first met Stewart Headlam through the Land Reform Union, a Georgite [Henry George society in favor of land nationalization. Headlam, an ordained clergyman, was banned from preaching because his sermons attacked the wide gap between rich and poor and promoted distrust of middle-class reformers. Shaw's plays, "John Bull's Other Island" (1904) and "Major Barbara" (1905) concern the issues of poverty and women's rights and imply that socialism would help solve the problems created by capitalism.
