Description:

Quintessential Jack Ruby Strip Club Photograph and Ephemera Archive

A group of photographs and club ephemera relating to Jack Ruby's Carousel Club, with additional items from The Stork Club and The Colony Club. Jack Ruby (1911-1967) was a Dallas nightclub owner, infamous for having shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He moved to Dallas in 1947 and managed numerous nightclubs and strip clubs, including the Carousel Club and the Vegas Club. Included in the archive are the following:

A 7" x 9", Dallas, November 26, 1963, black and white photograph of Ruby with Lori Adams. Adams is seen signing her new work contract, having graduated from her "strippers school".

A 10.375" x 8.375", Dallas, no date, group photograph of Ruby and others outside the Carousel Club.

Five Envelopes and One Stationery Sheet for the Carousel Club.

14" x 11" original graphic artist's mock-up for a proposal for the Carousel Club, including a matchbook cover, menu, and logo.

A Stork Club matchbook cover and Menu, with an extensive menu, including a Chinese Food section.

A Colony Club Sneak Preview booklet, with a seminude dancer advertising the club.

A Photograph Housing Folder, with numerous signatures and well-wishes on the back addressed to a "Miss America" Betty.

The Carousel Club was located at 1312 1/2 Commerce Street in downtown Dallas, and had been bought under the name "The Sovereign" by Ruby in 1959. On the day of Kennedy's assassination, Ruby had the club shut down for the evening and was visibly upset about the president's murder. The next day, Ruby made his way to the basement of the Dallas Municipal Building, stepped out from the crowd as Oswald was being led past, and shot Kennedy's suspected killer. Lee Harvey Oswald died just under two hours later, and Jack Ruby was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. He died from complications due to cancer before his sentence was completed.
