Description:

Truman Harry

President Truman writes about His Vice-President Elect Barkley “no President could have a finer or more capable partner than I will have … a respected leader among all persons in all sections of this Nation … he will be my strong right arm…"

John W. Snyder’s close friendship with Harry S. Truman began in 1928 when Truman was a County Judge. They served together in the U.S. Army Reserves after World War I. Lt. Col. Snyder was in Col. Truman’s Missouri Regiment, the 381st Field Artillery, 102nd Division. Snyder served President Truman as his Federal Loan Administrator (1945), Director of the Office of Mobilization and Reconversion (1945-1946), and Secretary of the Treasury (1946-1953).

Typed Letter Signed “Harry S Truman” as President, one page, 8” x 10.5”. The White House, Washington, December 15, 1948. To “Honorable John W. Snyder / Secretary of the Treasury / Washington, D.C.” Faint browning mark in left portion. Never folded. Fine condition. Typed “COPY” in the upper left, this letter was signed ink by President Truman. The original signed letter to Snyder on White House stationery, most probably accompanying this letter, was presented to Barkley.

In full, “I am proud to be able to send a message to the gathering which honors Vice President-Elect Alben W. Barkley at Town Hall tonight and I wish that I were able to tell all of you in person what I think of Alben W. Barkley. I know that no President could have a finer or more capable partner than I will have in the four years that lie ahead. Senator Barkley’s leadership in the Senate and his skill as a legislator have won him an admiration all over the Nation which crosses party lines and makes Senator Barkley a respected leader among all persons in all sections of this Nation. I know that he will be my strong right arm as all of us in America tackle the problems that lie ahead and join together in our efforts to build a just peace and to continue to demonstrate to the world that our brand of democracy and our free enterprise economy are the best way of life. Tonight I honor Senator Barkley for the efforts he has made towards those goals in the past and for the further service to those goals that he will give as Vice President.”

Accompanied by a photocopy of the article in the December 16, 1948, edition of “The New York Times” headlined “Barkley Is Praised / By Chief Executive,” subheaded “Vice President-Elect Hailed as / ‘Good Right Arm’ at Dinner / Honoring Him Here.” In part, “President Truman called Vice President-elect Alben W. Barkley the ‘finest and most capable partner any President ant President could ever have.’ He declared that Senator Barkley would be his ‘good right arm’ in the work ahead to make the nation and the world peaceful and prosperous. The President’s eulogy of his running-mate in the last campaign was in the form of a message read at a dinner honoring Senator Barkley, given by Town Hall Associates, at the Waldorf-Astoria last night. Senator Barkley is to receive the Town Hall award for distinguished service at Town Hall at 11 o’clock this morning. The dinner was attended by 1,500 persons, and the dais seated a large number of high-ranking Democrats, including four members of the Cabinet and half a dozen Senators or Senators-elect…” The article mentions the names of six speakers, in addition to Barkley, who spoke, including John W. Snyder.
