Churchill Winston

Pieces of Winston Churchill's Cigar!

A handsome limited edition presentation display featuring tobacco leaves from one of Winston Churchill's ubiquitous El Dinamico Habana Cuban cigars! The loose leaves are stored in an archival-safe container below an iconic war-era photograph of Churchill, and above the Churchillian quote: “My rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars." Showcased in a black mat and ready for framing, overall size 11”x 16”. Comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity from University Archives (No. 11054), as well as photocopies of provenance documentation.

Churchill began smoking cigars while stationed in Cuba in 1895. Over the next seventy years, Churchill smoked a variety of premium cigars but preferred large (7" long) Cuban cigars. Churchill smoked 10 cigars a day on average, and tended to discard them as soon as he reached the halfway point (see below for a possible explanation of this curious behavior.)  El Dinamico Habana, the type of tobacco featured here, was one of his favorite brands.

Provenance: 2pp photocopy of note originally written by Edward E. Wadmer, one-time butler at Churchill's ancestral home Blenheim Palace, in January 1984. Wadmer related how he asked the former British Prime Minister for some souvenir cigars. Wadmer recalled: " … as I smoked cigars myself at that time I asked him [Churchill] of I could have one or two of his. He said there's some in my bedroom, ask the valet to give you some. He gave me a box with the remains of several boxes. I didn't realize how many were left, also there we[re] two or three bands which Sir Winston wrapped around the cigar to stop the salivas [sic] from putting the cigars out, as I'm afraid Sir Winston was getting difficulty [sic] in preventing it. I tried one of the cigars, but they were too strong, and I still have them to this day."
