Percival Rosseau Charming Sketch of Dogs with Inscription & Signature

A signed inscription with two small sketches of dogs reading, "á Mademoiselle Yvonne Bonadouture [sic]/l'amitié des animaux et de Percival Rosseau" (friend to animals and Percival Rosseau). With small sketches of a hound in profile and a smaller, spaniel-type dog facing forward. This page has clearly been removed from a larger sketchbook, with a slightly rough left edge. 1p, measuring 7" x 9.25", New York, dated January 7, 1917. Light edge toning but boldly signed. Very fine.

Percival Leonard Rosseau (1859-1937) was a French descendant born near Baton Rouge, Louisiana whose father and two older brothers were killed during the Civil War. His mother had also passed away and the family plantation was destroyed during General Sherman's Mississippi Campaign, leaving Rosseau an orphan without a home. Although he initially pursued a career in business, he finally enrolled at the Académie Julien in Paris and became a proficient artist. He became known for painting sporting dogs and hunting landscapes, and Rosseau was often invited by his patrons to hunt and paint on their estates. One of his most important patrons was Percy Rockefeller, who made Rosseau a member of his hunting club at Overhills. Rockefeller even built Rosseau a studio on his estate and often lent his bird dogs to Rosseau as models.
