Description:

Original Gaston Noury Watercolor Drawing Depicting Modern Dancer Loïe Fuller's Butterfly Dance

An original gouache and crayon drawing with metallic gold highlights depicting the American modern dancer Loïe Fuller (1862-1928) engaged in one of her celebrated butterfly dances, ca. 1893, by French poster artists and illustrator Gaston Noury (1866-1936). Fuller is shown in a pink and green striped robe with a sea shell bodice. Signed as "Gaston Noury" at lower right. Expected light toning and isolated foxing and water stains, else near fine. Framed behind glass, not examined out of the frame. A typed label affixed to the frame back reads: "Loie Fuller / in her / 'Le Papillon' / (Butterfly Dance) / by Gaston Noury (b. 1866 - ?) / c. 1893, Paris / Provenance: A.J. Pischl / Collection Jan Wahl." The sight size of the watercolor is 6.5" x 8.5" while the overall frame size is 12.75" x 14.75" x 1.5."

Loïe Fuller developed her signature style of modern dance after 1891: her Serpentine Dance, Butterfly Dance, and Fire Dance were widely lauded and imitated. Fuller used lengths of colorful fabrics and customized lighting to recreate movements found in nature, interpreting clouds, flowers, birds, and other animals. Her use of diaphanous materials, soft lighting, and dream-like dance compositions made her the darling of the Art Nouveau and Symbolist art movements. Fuller preceded fellow American modern dancer Isadora Duncan by about a decade.
