Vanderbilt (1821-1885) as "WH Vanderbilt V" (in his role as company vice president) at lower right of the certificate; and by the Commodore's favorite grandson and namesake, Cornelius Vanderbilt II (1843-1899) as "C Vanderbilt Jr / Treas." (as company treasurer) along a vertical orientation near the certificate's left edge. February 8, 1871. New York, New York. This stock certificate, signed by members of three generations of one of the wealthiest families in Gilded Age America, granted 500 $100 shares of Capital Stock of the Spuyten Duyvil and Port Morris Railroad Company to family patriarch Cornelius Vanderbilt. The investment of $50,000 in 1871 money equates to over $1.2 million in 2023 currency.

The Spuyten Duyvil and Port Morris Railroad Company was first established in the 1840s and connected the Hudson River via the Harlem River to Port Morris in the Bronx. The railroad went through several mergers and consolidations throughout its history, including in 1853, 1864, and 1871. Elements of the old Spuyten Duyvil and Port Morris Railroad are now part of the Metro-North Harlem railroad line.
