Dear Vance

As I promised to write you a long letter on my return from North Carolina. I hasten to
it in part, for I will write you a letter tho' not a long one for in truth I have picked up
nothing in my excursion worthy of notice. Death and marriage together have destroyed all the
charms of my native place. Among all my Sweethearts there is only one left to tell the news, but
then she is a divine creature, and perhaps-1 may see her again.

I fiund the situation of. my.father's fimily better than I expected. they are comfit-table.
and have property enough with care to support them decently. This afforded me great pleasure.
I was extreamly glad to hear on my arrival here that you were reinstated <2> in your
Staff appointment, and I sincerely wish you a continuance .of it until something better offers.
Write me immediately and believe me with great esteem.

Tho H. Williams.

[Docketing:] rhos H. Williams /30 July 1801 / I have returned from North Carolina

Thomas H. Williams (1773-1850) was born in North Carolina. He moved to Washington to assist Caleb Swan, paymaster general, in the War Department. In 1803, he migrated to New Orleans, where he became privatesecretary to Territorial Governor William C. C. Claiborne. In 1805, Secretary of State James Madison named Williams to the position of land register. He also served as secretary of Mississippi Territory from 1805 to 1806, and again from 1807 to 1809, when he became acting governor of the territory for three months. Williams served as collector at New Orleans from 1810 to 1813. In 1817, the Mississippi legislature chose Williams as one of the state's first U.S. senators, and he served until 1829. He retired to Tennessee and married. He established a plantation a few dozen miles north of that of his longtime friend Andrew Jackson, though he retained property in Mississippi.
