Description:

Nikola Tesla ALS Wishing a Happy New Year from New York Hotel

1p of a bifolium, measuring 5.25" x 6", New York, dated December 31, 1940. Addressed to a recipient only identified as "Carl" and written on Hotel New Yorker stationery. Reads in full: "This is to wish you a Happy New Year. Yours sincerely N. Tesla." With a flattened mail fold and light soiling. Pencil smudging on verso. A clear and beautiful signature.

Brilliant inventor, futurist, and engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) is best known for his groundbreaking contributions to electricity design, most notably his alternating current induction motor. He moved to the Hotel New Yorker in 1934; many believe Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. was paying his rent as Tesla had fallen into an impoverished state. Three years before this letter was written, Tesla was struck by a taxi while leaving the hotel and severely injured his back. He never fully recovered, and on January 7, 1943, he passed away in his room at the hotel. Tesla and his inventions fell into near obscurity after his death until the 1960s. Since then, there has been a resurgence in popular interest in Tesla, particularly since the 1990s and the founding of Tesla Inc. in 2003. Rather than buy a dozen shares of stock in the company, why not own a genuine object from the original genius himself!
