N. Peabody Patriot, Doc Letter Offers Fascinating Glimpse of Late Eighteenth-Century Medicine

This fascinating letter from Dr. Nathaniel Peabody of Exeter, New Hampshire, seeks to diagnose the condition of farmer Jeremiah Lock in Seabrook, approximately seven miles away toward the coast. Peabody sends some additional medicine with the letter and asks several questions of Lock to diagnose his condition further.

Mr Lock, Sir
I received a line from you, informing that, Pills marked C were gone, that your cough remained, and that you are troubled with a relax &c. I send you some drops, of which take 20 at a time in the Syrup once or twice in the night in lieu of the pills marked C. You may omit taking the Pills marked E. & F. so long as your relaxed habit of body continues. I wish to know the state of your pulse—how many in a minute counting them in the morning, and at Eleven oclock & at 5 oclock in the afternoon—are you thirsty?—do you sweat in nights? does your issues discharge freely?—are your feet warm—how is the pain in your side—do you raise in coughing &c If sir you cannot conveniently come this way, please to write & answer these Queries and I will send you such medicines & directions as may be proper—I am Sir, your very He Sert

Mr Jeremiah Lock

Nathaniel Peabody (1741-1823) was born in Massachusetts and studied medicine with his father. He moved to New Hampshire in 1761 and began the practice of medicine in Exeter. He became a lieutenant colonel in the militia and participated in the raid on Fort William and Mary in December 1774. He was elected to New Hampshire's revolutionary assembly in 1776 and served in the legislature for thirteen years over the next two decades. From 1777 to 1779, he was the adjutant general of the state militia, and from 1793 to 1798 was a major general in the militia. He replaced Josiah Bartlett in April 1779 as a delegate to the Continental Congress and served through the 1780 session. He was a delegate to the New Hampshire Constitutional Convention of 1782 and represented Rockingham County under the new constitution in the New Hampshire Senate (1785-1786, 1790-1793).

Jeremiah F. Lock (1729-1801) was born in Seabrook, New Hampshire, the son of Benjamin Lock and Matilda Janvrin Lock. He became a farmer and lived in Seabrook for his entire life. He died in Seabrook of shock in January 1801.
