Millard Fillmore Signed "The Provincial Letters of Blaise Pascal", 1859, From His Personal Library
"The Provincial Letters of Blaise Pascal", Derby and Jackson, Publisher, New York, 1859. Signed by President Millard Fillmore who signed his wife's name to the inner front paste down as "Mrs. Millard. Fillmore, June 20, 1859".
This book came from the Fillmore's personal library. President Fillmore, always the ardent book collector and reader since a child, often presented Caroline with books, in addition to carefully cataloguing both her and his collection. As is evidenced here he would sign her name on her behalf as establishing ownership and then catalogue her books. This book was signed by President Fillmore for Caroline. Having researched and reviewed other scarce books owned by President Fillmore we find that there is most often a catalogue number identifier on the title page found at the top, and another number along the bottom. This set was deaccessioned from the Buffalo and Erie County Historical library, the public library of which was co-founded by the Fillmores, and has the expected library sticker on the spine.
Lovely book with a tight and square binding. Rubbing to very tip of spine ends.
