Sendak Maurice

Maurice Sendak twice signed with an Alligator drawing, First German printing of The Nutshell Library

Diogenes Verlag AG Zurich, 1970. Near Fine First Edition, First German printing of The Nutshell Library, published as a miniature set of four books, each book 3.5" tall. Signed by Maurice Sendak twice, who included a signed stunning blue ink drawing of the "alligator" on the blank end paper of Alligators All Around "Alligatoren alluberall". Scarce original case still present and in excellent condition, and includes the second Sendak signature directly under his printed name. Provenance: Ex. Joyce Hanrahan to current owner

Near fine, First Edition, First German printing of "The Nutshell Library", published as a miniature set of four books, "Alligators All Around", "Chicken Soup With Rice", "Pierre", and "One was Johnny", each book has the original near fine dust jacket, all neatly housed in a decorative case (the case is also illustrated by Sendak). The set was signed by Sendak twice, once on the illustrated case, and a second time within "Alligators All Around",  in which Maurice Sendak also drew a beautiful sketch of an alligator in blue ink completely covering one of the blank pages of the book.

The set appears as unread and unopened with a very tight binding that snaps shut when opened. Each book is completely clean and new with crisp books and fine dust jackets. The slipcase is in very good condition with some expected slight overall rubbing. A stunning set of near fine books, signed slip case, with an original signed pen and ink drawing by Maurice Sendak.  A most unique set

Provenance: Acquired by present owner directly from the collection of Joyce Hanrahan, who at one point held one of the finest collections of Maurice Sendak in private hands. Hanrahan also authored the book, Works of Maurice Sendak 1947-1994, A Collection with Comments
