Description:

Manhattan Project Fred Zimmerli Signed Certificate Photo

A souvenir certificate inscribed and signed by Manhattan Project participant Frederick H. Zimmerli (1922-2017) as "Fred Zimmerli Project A fusing group" at lower left. The original certificate was issued from the "United States of America / War / Department / Army Service Forces - Corps of Engineers / Manhattan District" and certified that Fred H. Zimmerli of the University of California "has participated in work essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb, thereby contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II." An image of this certificate was printed on high-quality glossy photograph paper, and then signed by Zimmerli in blue felt pen. (Please note that the signature of U.S. Secretary of War Henry Stimson is photographically produced.) Near fine. 8.5" x 11."

The Manhattan Project was financed by the United States, with partners United Kingdom and Canada, between 1942-1946 for the study of uranium and plutonium as components of nuclear weapons. The long-term goal was pioneering the science and study of developing nuclear weapons; the short-term goal was decisively ending World War II.

Zimmerli was one of about 50 personnel (military and civilian) who participated in Project Alberta (also known as "Project A.") This group of scientists, mechanics, and electrical engineers was responsible for designing and assembling the "Fat Man" and "Little Boy" nuclear bombs on Tinian in the Mariana Islands in advance of Allied bomb drops. Project Alberta members were attached to the 509th Bomb Group. "Little Boy" was deployed over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and "Fat Man" was detonated over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
