An Order by the Commissioner of the Treasury to pay allowances for several persons during the Revolutionary War. 2pp (front and back), measuring 7.75" x 8.25", [England], dated July 7, 1777. The document has flattened folds, with some paper loss at the lower corner - affects very little of the text. Light edge toning. All bold signatures.

The Order is for the payment of six men's quarterly salaries "as Commoners for executing the Office of Treasurer of his Majesty's Exchequer." This includes Frederick Lord North, George Baron Cranley & Onslow, Francis Conway Lord Viscount Beauchamp, Charles Wolfran Cornwall, Charles Townshend, and William Henry Baron Westcote. The total sum comes up to just over £2000. With a signed receipt of the full sum on verso, signed by all as "North", "Onslow", "C.W. Cornwall", "Westcote", "Townshend", and "Beauchamp".

Frederick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford (1732-1792) was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1770 to 1782 and led the country through the majority of the American Revolution. George Onslow, 1st Earl of Onslow (1731-1814) was a British peer and served as junior Lord of the Treasury from 1765 to 1777. He later became Comptroller of the Household and Treasurer of the Household and was created Baron Cranley in May 1776. Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st Marquess of Hertford (1718-1794) was a British courtier who was created Viscount Beauchamp in 1750. Charles Wolfran Cornwall (1735-1789) served in the House of Commons from 1768 to 1789 and was Speaker of the House of Commons from 1780 to 1789. He was keenly supportive of the government's response to the American revolutionaries. Charles Townshend, 1st Baron Bayning (1728-1810) was elected to the House of Commons in 1756 and served as Lord of the Admiralty from 1765 to 1770 and Lord of the Treasury from 1770 to 1777. William Henry Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton (1724-1808) became Royal Governor of the colony of South Carolina in 1755 and served until 1760, seeing the colony through the French and Indian War. He worked to gain an alliance with the Cherokee and upheld a strong belief in respecting treaty agreements with Natives, something which greatly aggravated settlers in South Carolina.
