Description:

Lincoln Abraham

Lincoln Memorial Dedication Program Signed by 4 U.S. Presidents & 30+ Lincoln Scholars, Artists, Etc., Unique!

A handsome over-sized presentation album containing a Lincoln Memorial dedication ceremony program signed by 35 people including former 27th U.S. President William H. Taft, sitting 29th U.S. President Warren G. Harding, and future 30th and 31st U.S. Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. Also signed by 31 other signatories including Supreme Court Justices, Cabinet members, ministers, and Lincoln artists, scholars, poets, and collectors. Expected superficial wear to covers and edges, and the central binding is a little fragile. Light overall toning, else very good to near fine. A handwritten presentation label located at the top of one of the pages could be removed for full presentation value.  A crayon and ink illustration is found in the back endpapers; the rest of the pages are blank. 10.75" x 13".

The front album cover, decorated with Lincoln's portrait in profile, is pencil-inscribed: "Autographed Program of Dedication Ceremonies of Lincoln Memorial at Washington." Signatures are found on both inner pages of the 2-page program. The left page lists the names of Lincoln Memorial Commission members and its three principal artists, architect Henry Bacon, sculptor Daniel Chester French, and muralist Jules Guerin. Ceremonial events are listed on the facing page. Among our signatures are those of three of the ceremony's officiants: Taft, who presented the monument; Harding, who accepted the monument; and Edwin Markham, who read its dedication poem.

The later presentation label, which could be removed, was inscribed and signed by Henry B. Rankin (1837-1927), one of Lincoln and Henredon's protegees at their Springfield law office. Consider this author of Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln (1916) a bonus signature! The label reads: "With a hand that often clasped the hand of Abraham Lincoln, Henry B. Rankin, Springfield, Ills., May 31, 1925."

Discussion about constructing an enduring monument to assassinated 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) had begun soon after his death. While smaller monuments had been erected, approval for a larger-scale project did not materialize until 1910, when Congress approved funding for a monument in Washington, D.C. The site of the future Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall, as well as its architectural and artistic design, had been approved in 1913. Then President Taft officiated at the initial dedication ceremony held on February 12, 1914.

The Lincoln Memorial was officially dedicated and presented on Decoration Day (Memorial Day), May 30, 1922. Ceremonies took place on the steps of the new edifice, a Greek inspired marble temple surrounded by a 36-column peristyle. In the interior, Lincoln's two most famous speeches, the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Speech, flanked a 19-foot-high monumental marble sculpture of Lincoln seated at center. Friezes decorated the exterior of the partly open-air building. Thousands of people attended the dedication ceremony, including Civil War veterans, Congressmen, and foreign ambassadors.

A true tour-de-force of Lincolniana; perfect for any presidential or Lincoln collector!
