Khrushchev Archive of Approximately 165 Photos, Clippings, & Booklet

A large archive, housed in a white binder, of AP Wire Photos, UPI Telephotos, UPI Colorphotos, newspaper clippings, and a booklet relating to Nikita Khrushchev, between the period 1956 to 1964, during multiple travels and meetings with world leaders. All of the photographs are black and white, and include images of: Khrushchev's visit to the United States in 1959; clashes with the United Nations and British Prime Minister, Harold MacMillan in 1960; the 1961 signing of a Mutual Defense Treaty with North Korea; a 1961 meeting with India's Prime Minister Nehru in 1961; Celebrations with returning cosmonauts; various protests against Khrushchev; and numerous candid images with President Dwight Eisenhower. From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

Nikita Khrushchev (1894-1971) was the first secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and chairman of the Council of Ministers. His rise to power coincided with one of the darkest periods in Soviet history, when Stalin began a series of bloody purges to consolidate his power. Eventually, Khrushchev would control the Communist party, coming to power in 1953. He visited the U.S. in 1959, marking the first time a Soviet premier visited America, and spent 13 days in the country. The visit concluded with a meeting with President Eisenhower at Camp David, with a tentative agreement to place no deadline on the impending Berlin crisis.

However, Khruschev's desire for power was not easily assuaged. Under Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Union sent massive aid to communist China in the 1950s and planned to provide China with an atomic bomb and full documentation. In relations with the West, his tenure was marked by a series of high-stakes crises: the U-2 affair, the building of the Berlin Wall, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. However, by 1964, he had alienated too many powerful Soviet constituencies. A group of men lead by Leonid Brezhnev ousted Khrushchev, and he retired to a dacha in rural Russia, where he died in 1971.
