Berthold Konrad Hermann Albert Speer (1905-1981) served as Minister of Armaments and War Production in Nazi Germany. He joined the Nazi party in 1931 and soon became a close member of Hitler's inner circle. In 1944, he established a task force to increase aircraft production, effectively using slave labor for the benefit of the German war effort. When the war ended, he was convicted at the Nuremberg trials and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, narrowly avoiding the death penalty. Despite claiming that he had no knowledge of the Nazi extermination plans, this was revealed to be untrue in a 1971 private correspondence that later came to light.

Nearing the end of WWII, Karl Dönitz (1891-1980) briefly succeeded Adolf Hitler as Head of State until Germany's unconditional surrender. Hitler had named Dönitz in his last will and testament as President of Germany and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, a position he gained following Hitler's suicide on April 30, 1945. Following the war, Dönitz was indicted as a war criminal at the Nuremberg trials in 1946, was found guilty of crimes against peace and crimes against the laws of war, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He remained unrepentant in prison, believing that he had committed no crimes.
