John R. Livingston Writes to Gilbert Livingston

ALS with integral leaf addressed to: "Gilbert Livingston Esq/Poughkeepsie". Measures 7" x 11", dampstained, but completely legible. Else in fine condition.

In full, the letter reads, "You will oblige me if you will on receipt of this send down Mr Cornelius TerBush's obligation which was left in your hands - A dividend of the little property he made over to the Creditors will be made next month as I should be out of Town . You will forward it to Mr S. Leary and if any charges are due he will discharge them." John R. Livingston (1750-1822) was a brother of Robert R. Livingston, Chancellor of New York. He served with Montgomery at Battle of Quebec as junior officer. Gilbert Livingston (1742-1806) of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., was a member of the New York Colonial Assembly (1775-1777), and the New York State Assembly (1777-1778, 1788-1789) representing Dutchess County. A 1782 mercantile account of Cornelius TerBush of Poughkeepsie appears in the papers of Aaron Lopez, a key supplier of the American Revolutionary forces, in the American Jewish Historical Society in New York City.
