John Quincy Adams Signed Ornately Engraved Ship's Passport

Partly-printed Document Signed,  "J.Q. Adams" as President,  one page, 12" x 15"  on parchment. Dated Massachusetts, "July 27, 1826,"  countersigned "H. Clay"  as Secretary of State. Comprised of a set of wonderful engravings along the top scalloped edge. Vibrant, strong contrasting ink. Expected folds, light soiling to right margin. Intact near fine saw toothed paper seal of the United States affixed at bottom left. Docketed and endorsed on verso. Exceptional near fine condition overall.

A scallop-top ship's passport featuring a detailed engraving of a frigate and a lighthouse with a city harbor scene, issued to ".....the Brig William Thacher of New Bedford David Collins, master......mounted with no guns and navigated by Fifteen men..." We were able to locate the "Brig William Thacher, New Bedford 1819" in the Martha's Vineyard Whaling Records as a merchant ship. A lovely example in highly collectible condition, presents well.
