Description:

Kennedy Jr. John

John Kennedy Jr. Plays Soldier in Atoka, Virginia

John Kennedy Jr. original, first generation, 5" x 7," vintage, glossy, double-weight photograph by Cecil Stoughton, with Stoughton's unique numbering system on verso, and his photographers stamp, his own file example.

An adorable photo of John Kennedy Jr, who was wearing a helmet and holding a toy sub machine gun on the grounds of the Kennedy family residence, Wexford, in Atoka, Virginia. Taken over Veteran's day weekend, John John had accompanied his father at the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, an event which obviously inspired him. The photo earmarked a last moment of childhood innocence as it was taken only about 10 days before President Kennedy's assassination. The irony of the gun is profound.

Cecil William Stoughton (January 18, 1920 - November 3, 2008) was an American photographer best known for being President John F. Kennedy's photographer during his White House years.  Stoughton was present at the motorcade at which Kennedy was assassinated, and subsequently took the only photograph on board Air Force One of Lyndon B. Johnson being sworn in as the next President.

Provenance:  From the estate of Cecil Stoughton
