John Hancock Signed July 1775 Appointment in Response to and 2 Weeks After Bunker Hill!!

A 1775 military appointment signed by John Hancock as President of the Continental Congress. 1p partially-printed, measuring 12.25" x 8.75" (sight), [Philadelphia], dated July 1, 1775. Signed "John Hancock" in the stateman's iconic script, and countersigned by "Chas. Thomson" as Secretary. The appointment has been matted and framed along with an engraved portrait of Hancock to the overall size of 21.5" x 14.75". With flattened folds and separations at the folds. Former repairs with tape have caused slight staining and wear. There is a small tear at the upper center edge. Light toning throughout and faint scattered foxing. Boldly signed with minor staining around signature.

The document appoints "Crispus Graves Gent…Ensign in Capt. Worthy's Company in the 31st Regiment commanded by Colo. Phinney, in the Army of the United Colonies, raised for the Defense of American Liberty, and for repelling every hostile Invasion thereof…", in recognition of his "Patriotism, Valour, Conduct, and Fidelity."

A remarkable military document from the beginning days of the American Revolution. Col. Phinney went to Falmouth and soon after the first of July, the companies commenced their march to Cambridge, and probably all the companies joined the regiment during July or August. While the arrangements were being made for the formation of the regiment, the battle of Bunker Hill was fought; and when they finally entered active service it must have been at a period of the greatest anxiety and excitement. The army assembled at Cambridge was an unorganized and undisciplined body of men, brought together in a time of great excitement and alarm, but was composed of men animated with the noblest spirit, ready and willing to do their duty.
