John Glover, a fisherman and merchant from Marblehead, Massachusetts, used his considerable knowledge of boats and sea-faring to further the Patriot cause. Glover commanded a Revolutionary War amphibious unit known as the Marblehead Militia, or "Glover's Regiment," comprised of mostly fellow mariners. Glover's Regiment safely evacuated George Washington's troops off Long Island in August 1776, and also secretly transported Patriot forces across the Delaware River in advance of the Battle of Trenton in December 1776. Glover participated at the Siege of Boston, took part in the Saratoga and Rhode Island campaigns, and patrolled the Hudson River.

Glover addressed this missive to Colonel Edward Wigglesworth (1742-1826), commander of a Massachusetts Line regiment mustered from around the Newburyport area (today located in northeastern Massachusetts just seven miles south of the New Hampshire state line.) Wigglesworth was third in command of the American fleet after Generals Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold. Wigglesworth saw action on Lake Champlain and was present at Valley Forge. Wigglesworth's command position drained his financial resources and he was forced to resign from official duties in 1779.
