Description:

John and Jackie Kennedy Christmas Card that was Never Sent!

White House Christmas Card from 1963, signed in facsimile by both Jacqueline and John Kennedy shortly before his assassination. Standard size Hallmark Christmas card showing "Creche in East Room, The White House". 4.5" x 6.5". Printed signatures. Near fine.

Considered the JFK Christmas Card that was never sent, this rare White House card evokes one of the nation's darkest holiday seasons. The evening of Wednesday, November 20, 1963 was one of the legendary Kennedy parties. The occasion was a reception in the East Room for the federal judiciary, including the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. Although John and Jacqueline did not know it, this was also their last night together in the presidential mansion.

Jackie had looked forward to their annual holiday activities, including spending Thanksgiving at the Kennedy family compound, and Christmas in Palm Beach visiting with the President's siblings and parents. But first they would fly to Texas on November 21, for a two-day campaign swing through five cities, including Dallas.

Before they departed, they had both selected and ordered their annual Christmas card, with the interior featuring an embossed Presidential seal of an American Eagle. The Kennedy's signed the first handful of the cards, fewer than 75, at their leisure, others bear the printed signatures.

Instead of returning from Texas ready for the holidays, Jacqueline returned to a nightmare. Instead of supervising the elaborate decorations and festivities, her remaining family moved out of the White House on December 6, two weeks after the assassination.

This holiday card that was never sent survives as a reminder of the Christmas that John and Jackie Kennedy never celebrated, remaining a fragile relic of the all too "brief shining moment"
