In part: "I wrote to Judge Parmelee…urged me not to press my claim on the house, promising to have the trusts paid over to me as they accrued to keep down the interest…Joseph wrote to me, in reply to an inquiry from me, that the house was insured for my benefit. Please let me know in what office. - Mr. [illegible] J. Van Buren told me a Mr. Strong who I believe has a store near the City Hotel wanted a moderate priced house…" Flattened mail folds and light edge toning. As stated, the letter is a fragment of the whole letter, with the middle of the document having seemingly been clipped out. Boldly signed.

John Adams Dix (1798-1879) served as a New York Senator and president of the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad prior to the Civil War. Just prior to the war's beginning, he was appointed as Secretary of the Treasury by President Buchanan. When war broke out, he joined the Union Army as a major general and commanded the Department of Maryland and the Department of Pennsylvania. In the summer of 1862, he and Confederate General Daniel H. Hill established the Dix-Hill Cartel, which outlined a scale of equivalents for which prisoners could be exchanged. Although too old for field combat, Dix still played a key role in the Union's victory, notably suppressing the New York draft riots in 1863. After the war, he served as Governor of New York from 1873-1874.
