Description:

JFK State Funeral PSA Type I Photo, Entering the Capitol Rotunda

A black and white photograph, measuring 8" x 10", Washington, D.C., dated November 24, 1963. Jackie Kennedy, her two children, and Bobby Kennedy can be seen climbing the steps of the State Capitol as John F. Kennedy's casket is carried by guards in front of them. The image was taken by Abbie Rome, with her photography stamp on verso. Numbered 8255-IV. PSA Slabbed and Graded Type I, measuring 9.75" x 13" overall. With light toning, soiling, and wear. Very fine.

After the autopsy at Bethesda Naval Hospital, President Kennedy's body was prepared for burial by embalmers and placed in a new mahogany casket. The body was returned to the White House at about 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, where it lay in repose in the East Room for 24 hours. The following day, a state funeral was held in the United States Capitol Rotunda, and nearly 300,000 people watched a horse-drawn caisson carry President Kennedy's flag-covered casket on its journey to the Capitol Rotunda to lie in state. The First Lady, holding her two children by the hand, followed the casket, together with Robert F. Kennedy. President John F. Kennedy was the first president in more than 30 years to lie in state in the rotunda, the last being William Howard Taft in 1930. He is one of only two Democratic presidents to lie in state at the Capitol; the other being Lyndon B. Johnson.
